The Department of Food Science at Cornell University has joined forces with the Department of Food Science at the University of Massachusetts, to bring you a bigger, better summer research experience opportunity!
Eight years ago, the Department of Food Science at Cornell University initiated a program, offering undergraduate research experience in food science, and the Food Science Summer Scholar program was born. To date, 118 students have participated in this program; you can read more about past participants by clicking here. Besides research experience, participants learn about various career opportunities within food science, take field trips to area industries (large and small), as well as meet on a semi-weekly basis to discuss various topics including Ethics in Food Science, Applying for Graduate School, Product Development, Learning from Research, and more. On the last day of the program, scholars are given the opportunity to present their research to an audience of peers.
Despite a yearly increase in applications, we have been able to accept only 17 to 20 students per year. However, realizing the importance of research experience and the positive impact this program has on participants, we have developed the program to include the Food Science Department at the University of Massachusetts. Beginning summer 2008, we will be able to offer this opportunity to more students!
